The 7 Figure Goal

I’ve been keeping a secret from you all for the past 3 months. The secret is that I have been on a journey that scared the shit out of me since my 38th birthday (in August) when I sat down and wrote 6 zeroes behind a 1. By my 39th birthday, my husband and I were going to…excuse me…are going to generate one million dollars in revenue.

How did I come up with that number? I literally just pulled it out of my ass! It’s based on nothing. No calculation, no feasibility, no plan. Just a number I’ve never thought of for myself. A number that stretched me. A number that had my Sharpie Marker frozen on the Post-It note (I love my sticky notes) for a good 10 minutes. That’s kind of how I knew it was the right number.

Back in my corporate days, we had this ritual every January whereby we, as Directors, would receive our annual revenue targets. Once those numbers flashed up on the screen, we would all say this phrase in unison: “There’s no fuckin’ way!”

Alas, despite our protests and our lobbying that the organization was setting us up for failure, one truth remained: the number was the number and would not change.

So how did we get from “no fuckin’ way!” to celebrating at the end of the year because we over delivered? We stopped using hope as a strategy. We stopped simply just “trying our best” and we began focusing on the gap. The gap simply was what was between the numbers that we could see today, and where we needed to be by the end of the year.

Back to my million dollar goal and that’s what I did. I opened my excel spreadsheet and I started plugging in the numbers that I could see today. Desperate to make that gap smaller, I started remembering pockets of money and untapped opportunities. Suddenly, the zeros in my gap became significantly less. What?? Could this actually be doable?

But now I have a clear gap staring at me that is significantly less than one million but still significant. I don’t see where this money will come from. So what do I do to fill the gap? What am I not seeing today that is sitting out there as untapped potential? I started throwing random ideas onto the excel and estimating numbers for them. Again, a lot of “out of my ass” creativity with a bit of research as well to make sure I wasn’t way off.

Once I had that list, I started to build out sticky note goals (yes this is my method) that detailed out what steps I would need to take in order to explore that potential. Here I am 3 months later and I have knocked out every single one of those steps and hit my micro-goals.

Do I know if doing all these steps will get me to a million dollars?? NOPE!!

See here’s the thing about the 7 figure goal. It’s actually not about the destination of 7 figures at all. What it’s really about is stretching creativity. Operating on a different frequency that says that everything I do for the next 365 days needs to be bigger! So now, every time I get a new idea that maybe is a 4 figure idea, my mind instantly starts rotating on how add more zeroes to that number. When I collaborate with people on projects I make it very clear to them what I want the revenue potential to be so that they too can start operating on that frequency as well.

In other words, anyone in this boat will be rowing at a 7 figure pace. That’s the rule for being on my team.

So now that I’ve let you all in on my little secret, let me know if you want to join my team?
